Martha is from Peterborough, and came to Ottawa to begin her university education. She received a bilingual Honours B.A., magna cum laude, in Environmental Studies from the University of Ottawa. Throughout her undergraduate degree Martha was active in community life by founding a Blood Donor’s Clinic, volunteering at Amnesty International, and student politics.
While pursuing her law degree, also at the University of Ottawa, Martha was actively involved with the student-run Community Legal Aid Clinic; she was the division leader of Community Legal Education, and an elected member of the Steering and Planning Committee. Martha also volunteered with the Ottawa Family Services Supervised Access Pogram, and at the Family Law Information Centre where she became the Pro Bono Students Coordinator in her final year. For Martha’s community involvement and academic achievement she was awarded: Ernst & Young Upper Year Bursary; University of Ottawa Social Justice Fellowship Recipient; Catherine Helen McLean Memorial Scholarship, and the Ultramar Environmental Education Scholarship.
Martha is a member of the Sierra Club of Canada’s Litigation Committee, and an avid hiker.
